Award-winning Nigerian music star Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, accompanied by social commentator and activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, paid a courtesy visit to the Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Lagos.
The visit, which formed part of the festive Yuletide season activities, was organised to gain firsthand insight into the legal and administrative procedures that govern the release of inmates, particularly those eligible for discharge through fine payments and other court-approved mechanisms.
Upon arrival, the duo were received by Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Sanni Richard, the Officer-in-Charge of the facility. He provided a detailed briefing on the operational framework of the custodial centre, emphasising that inmate releases are strictly conducted in accordance with court orders and established correctional regulations.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (Costa ), Lagos State Command, through its Public Relations Officer Osho Onimisi Joseph, reiterated the agency’s commitment to transparency, professionalism and adherence to the rule of law, affirming that no prisoner is freed without proper legal backing. The visit also served to address public misconceptions about correctional processes and highlighted the importance of corrective reforms.
In addition to observing custodial procedures, the engagement provided an opportunity for Burna Boy and VeryDarkMan to interact with officials and extend goodwill during the season. The NCoS reaffirmed its dedication to the safe, secure, humane custody, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates in line with statutory and international best practices.
