El Kaabi Shines as Morocco Cruise to 3–0 Victory to Top AFCON Group and Reach Knockout Stages

Today, Morocco delivered a commanding performance to secure a decisive victory in their final group match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, thrilling domestic fans and stamping their authority on the tournament. The hosts defeated Zambia 3–0 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, a result that saw the Atlas Lions finish top of Group A with seven points and firmly booked their place in the knockout stages as group winners.

From the opening whistle, Morocco looked sharp and dominant, fully embracing their role as one of the tournament favorites. Ayoub El Kaabi was the star of the show, scoring twice to lead the charge — including a spectacular overhead kick that sealed the victory — and Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz continued his rich scoring form with his third consecutive goal of the tournament.

Morocco’s opening goal came early on, setting the tone for a confident display. The quick start demonstrated their intent to control the match and avoid any late-stage Group A drama. El Kaabi’s first strike came from close range after excellent build-up play, giving the hosts a lead they would never relinquish. Díaz then applied the finish to a well-worked team move, scoring for the third game in a row and showcasing the attacking depth Morocco possesses.

Six minutes into the second half, El Kaabi once again found the net, this time with a breathtaking overhead effort that left the Zambian goalkeeper with no chance. The goal was initially called offside but was subsequently awarded after a VAR review confirmed its legitimacy — much to the delight of the home crowd.

The result meant Morocco completed their group campaign with two wins and one draw, a tally that confirmed them as group leaders ahead of Mali and Zambia. The victory was also a statement after their previous game saw a rare slip in form — a 1–1 draw against Mali that ended their remarkable 19-match winning streak in all competitions.

One of the feel-good stories from today was the return of captain Achraf Hakimi from injury. Although he came off the bench in the second half, his re-entry into action was met with loud cheers from the 62,000 supporters in attendance. It was his first appearance at the tournament after an ankle injury sidelined him for Morocco’s earlier matches.

With this result, Morocco now advance to the Round of 16, where they will stay in Rabat and face one of the best third-placed sides from the group stage on January 4, 2026. Their triumph today not only keeps their hopes alive in the pursuit of AFCON glory but also reinforces their status as a powerhouse in African football, particularly given their recent achievements — including qualifying as the first African nation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and winning the 2025 Arab Cup.
