Super Eagles Receive Housing Rewards as Federal Government Fulfills 2024 Promise
Super Eagles stars have finally received the housing and land rewards promised by the Federal Government of Nigeria following their silver‑medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire. This fulfillment comes nearly two years after the squad returned home as runners‑up, reigniting national pride despite narrowly missing out on the championship.
After the team’s remarkable performance at AFCON 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu publicly pledged to reward the players with houses, land, and national honours in recognition of their dedication and achievement. This promise was made during a reception at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, emphasizing the government’s commitment to honouring the squad’s hard work on the continental stage.
On December 22, 2025, the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC), formally handed over housing documents and land allocation certificates to members of the Super Eagles. The ceremony, which took place at the team’s base, marked the official fulfillment of the 2024 pledge, finally providing the players with tangible rewards for their outstanding contributions.
The squad members who benefited from this initiative include some of Nigeria’s most prominent footballers, such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Paul Onuachu, Calvin Bassey, and Alex Iwobi. Goalkeepers like Stanley Nwabali, defenders including Zaidu Sanusi and Bruno Onyemaechi, as well as midfielders and attackers such as Moses Simon and Francis Uzoho, also received housing allocations. For many of the players, these rewards represent both a personal milestone and public recognition of their efforts.
In addition to the houses and land, the government conferred national honours on the Super Eagles squad. Awards like the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) highlighted the significance of their AFCON achievement, offering a prestigious state recognition of their dedication to Nigerian football and national unity.
Speaking at the event, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau expressed satisfaction with the government’s timely fulfillment of the promise, stressing that honoring commitments to national teams builds confidence and motivates players. “Unlike previous occasions where promised rewards were delayed, this administration prioritized ensuring the squad received recognition before the next major football campaign,” Gusau said.
