Arsenal Suffer First Home Defeat of the Season in Dramatic 3–2 Loss to Manchester United

Arsenal’s hopes of consolidating their position atop the Premier League took a sharp blow on Sunday, 25 January 2026, as Manchester United stunned the Gunners 3–2 at the Emirates Stadium. In front of their home supporters, Arsenal appeared poised to take a significant step toward the title — only for a late United winner to plunge Mikel Arteta’s side into disappointment.
The match began with Arsenal showing attacking intent, and they struck first in the 29th minute through unfortunate circumstances. Under sustained pressure, Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez inadvertently turned the ball into his own net after a dangerous pass from Arsenal’s forwards. The goal seemed to set the tone for Arsenal domination in the opening half.

However, United responded before the break. Midfielder Bryan Mbeumo seized on a rare chance to equalize in the 37th minute, finishing calmly to level the score and shift momentum. Arsenal’s defense, usually resolute this season, looked stretched as United grew in confidence.

The second half saw the visitors take the lead for the first time. In the 50th minute, young forward Patrick Dorgu unleashed a powerful strike from distance, finding the top corner and giving United a 2–1 advantage. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the away supporters and forced Arsenal to rethink their approach.

Arsenal did not let their heads drop. After sustained pressure and a series of set-pieces, they equalized in the 84th minute through substitute Mikel Merino. The goal came from a chaotic corner in the box, with Merino reacting quickest to poke home and bring the Emirates crowd to life once again. Arsenal looked determined to rescue a result.

Just when it seemed the game might finish level, Manchester United struck late. In the 87th minute, Matheus Cunha unleashed a brilliant long-range effort that curled past the outstretched Arsenal goalkeeper to seal a dramatic 3–2 victory for the visitors. The strike was both spectacular and cruel for the Gunners, who had dominated large spells but were ultimately undone by a late winner.

This result marked Arsenal’s first home defeat of the 2025-26 Premier League season and extended their winless run in the league to three matches. Before today’s loss, they had been widely considered strong favorites for the title due to their high point tally and exciting attacking style.

The defeat also has broader implications for the title race. Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League table shrank to just four points as both Manchester City and Aston Villa secured victories elsewhere over the weekend. This has opened the race up more than many Gunners fans would have liked at this stage of the season.
