Arteta Confirms Injury Setbacks for Calafiori and Mosquera Ahead of Liverpool Clash

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided a clear injury update on two key defenders: Riccardo Calafiori and Cristhian Mosquera. As the Gunners sit near the top of the table, fitness news has taken centre stage — especially with Liverpool looming as one of the toughest challenges of the season.
Arteta didn’t shy away from the facts when asked about the availability of both defenders. On the eve of the match, he confirmed that both Calafiori and Mosquera will not be involved against Liverpool. The news will undoubtedly be disappointing for Arsenal supporters hoping for a fully fit squad for Thursday’s massive fixture.

Calafiori — Still on the Sidelines

Riccardo Calafiori has been absent since before Christmas, when he last featured in Arsenal’s Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace. Despite ongoing rehabilitation work, Arteta confirmed that the Italian full-back is not yet ready to return. “No,” Arteta replied when asked if Calafiori would be available for Liverpool. He’s progressing through the final stages of his rehab and will be monitored closely, with hopes that he could be back soon, but he won’t feature in this crucial match.

The 23-year-old’s absence has been a blow, particularly given the freedom and attacking threat he provides from left-back when fit. Calafiori’s pace, crossing ability, and comfort on the ball had seen him quickly earn a regular role in Arteta’s side before injuries began to mount. Yet, after suffering a minor injury in training prior to the Brighton game, he has not been involved in match-day squads and is waiting to complete his final rehab steps before a return.

Mosquera’s Ankle Problem Persists

Cristhian Mosquera’s situation is similar. The centre-back picked up an ankle injury during a match against Brentford in early December, and Arteta has said previously that it would sideline him for multiple weeks — longer than initially anticipated. Like Calafiori, Mosquera has yet to return to full training, and is still unavailable for selection.

Mosquera’s injury has been described in club updates as somewhat “complicated”, with no specific return date provided — though some outlets project a potential comeback timeframe around mid-January. This means he will likely miss a few more fixtures before being considered for selection again.

Positive Notes Elsewhere

Despite these setbacks, Arteta was keen to stress that Arsenal’s overall injury picture shows signs of improvement. Other players returning from knocks, including key attacking names, have helped bolster squad depth. One notable example is Kai Havertz, who trainers have managed carefully to ensure he comes back at full strength rather than risk a setback.

Still, losing two defenders ahead of a high-stakes game against Liverpool is far from ideal. Arteta’s defensive unit will have to adapt, with other squad members stepping up to fill the void left by Calafiori and Mosquera.
