Liverpool and Manchester United Linked with Crystal Palace Star Adam Wharton in January Window
Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has emerged as one of the Premier League's most coveted talents in the January transfer window. The 21-year-old England international, who joined Palace from Blackburn Rovers in February 2024 for around £18-22 million, has impressed with his composure, passing range, and defensive nous. His rapid rise—culminating in senior England caps and a key role in Palace's FA Cup triumph last season—has attracted attention from top clubs, including fierce rivals Liverpool and Manchester United.

Manchester United's interest in Wharton aligns with Ruben Amorim's rebuild. The Red Devils are prioritizing midfield reinforcements in 2026, particularly a defensive No. 6, as Casemiro's contract nears its end. Reliable sources like Sky Sports report United have explored options including Wharton, alongside Brighton's Carlos Baleba, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, and Wolves' Joao Gomes.

While a January move for Baleba seems unlikely, Wharton remains on their shortlist, with Reportminds understands that United's monitoring of Palace duo Wharton and striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Liverpool, under Arne Slot, are also admirers of Wharton as a potential target to bolster their midfield depth, especially amid ongoing squad evolution.
Although, Reportsminds understands Palace's desire to extend Wharton's deal (currently until 2029) and a possible gentleman's agreement for a summer exit to a Champions League club.

Palace value Wharton at over £80 million, potentially rising higher mid-season given his importance. Manager Oliver Glasner views him as integral, and the club has fended off interest before, as seen with Marc Guehi.

Other suitors complicate matters: Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham, and even Real Madrid have been linked, with valuations potentially reaching £100 million in summer. Wharton's agent has hinted at ambitions for Champions League football, which could favor clubs qualifying for Europe's elite competition.

A January transfer appears improbable for both Liverpool and United. Palace's stance prioritizes retention, and both clubs' plans lean toward summer 2026 for major midfield investments. Wharton, despite occasional injury concerns, remains one of the Premier League's brightest young talents—his progressive passing and maturity belying his age. Whichever club secures him could land a future England mainstay, but for now, Selhurst Park seems his home.
