Pogba penalty miss cost Man United Premier League top spot

Manchester United missed the chance to go top of the Premier League table on Monday night after a 1-1 draw at the Molineux against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

French World Cup winner, Paul Pogba had the chance to take the Red Devils ahead in the second half after he was brought down in the box but his penalty was saved by Rui Patricio.

Anthony Martial got the first goal of the game in the first half before Ruben Neves equalized for the home side to earn them another point.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men started the game with attacking intent and took the game to their opponents. The Red Devils enjoyed most of the possesion early on in the game and created chances.

Manchester United drew first blood in the first half with a ferocious left-footed ball from French striker, Anthony Martial after some lovely build-up from the Red Devils.

Luke Shaw broke forward and exchanged passes with Lingard and Rashford before the England international played Martial through on goal.

Martial beat Rui Patricio at his near post from an actute angle to put Manchester United ahead.

Both teams had more chances before the end of the first half but the Red Devils came closest to finding the back of the net before the break.

Martial pounced on a defensive error from Wolves but a fine tackle from Boly ensured that Rui Patricio could gather the ball and prevent a goal.

Manchester United began the second half where they left off and put pressure on the home team. However, Wolves got back into the game after Raul Jimenez hit the post with a great header.

The home side got the equalizer via a properly worked corner kick that was a routine from the training ground. After an exchange of passes between Jota and Moutinho, the Portuguese midfielder found Ruben Neves at the edge of the box.

Neves was 20 yards out but he curled a ferocious ball into the top corner. The ball hit the underside of the crossbar and into the net. After some consultation with the VAR over offside, the referee adjudged that no rules were broken.

Manchester United had a chance to go ahead after some lovely combination from Pogba and Martial. The World Cup winner was fouled in the box and the Red Devils were awarded a penalty.

Pogba stepped up to take the penalty but his spot kick was saved by Rui Patricio. The French midfielder did not use his trademark slow run-up to take the shot.

Both teams continued to press forward for another goal with United being the more dangerous side. However, the Red Devils failed to break the resolute Wolves defence down and would have to settle for a point.

Wolves play Torino during the week in the Europa League play-off before facing Burnley next weekend. Manchester United would hope to get back to winning ways when they host Crystal Palace at Old Trafford next weekend.
