Unai Emery has given Arsenal’s players two days off to ‘mentally recover’ from the dismal run that has left his job hanging by a thread.
Alexandre Lacazette’s stoppage-time equaliser on Saturday spared the Gunners an embarrassing home defeat by struggling Southampton — but the poor result piled even more pressure on the manager.
Yet Emery’s response was to allow his players two days off, despite the fact they face Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday and have not won for more than a month.
The Spaniard, understood to have lost some of the dressing room, wanted to give his players a psychological break following their run of one victory in their last eight games.
But the decision was met with surprise by some members of the club’s footballing operation.
Emery is under no illusions that his job is seriously under threat, yet felt time off was more beneficial than work on the training pitch.
