United went into the game on Tuesday night with 9 points and needed at least a point to seal their qualification into the round of 16. But the Leipzig side scored three goals against Solskjaer's side.
It was gathered that Red Devils followed the game with a Manchester derby on Saturday. The Red Devils welcomed their rival at the Old Trafford.
Both Pep Guardiola and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knew the significance of the game as they were two sides who have had their difficult spell in the campaign.
Solskjaer set up his side in a conservative manner which was the same as Guardiola.
Manchester United only clear chance was when Kyle Walker appear to have fouled Marcus Rashford in the box but the VAR ruled it out for offside.
The game ended goalless and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after the game that it was one of his best games as a manager of Manchester United.
“In my time against City, that is the best performance we’ve had,” Solskjaer, whose side did the double over City last term, told Sky Sports . “Not the best result, but the best performance. I know we beat them a few times last season, but these were different games. This is the most we have been in the game, as in possession-wise and control and we kept them away from our box more."
Meanwhile, he went ahead to praise his number goalkeeper, David De Gea who stopped Riyad Mahrez chance as well as Kevin De Bruyne effort.
He said: "They had a few big moments. David [De Gea] a great save, standing up, and Harry [Maguire] a good block so that’s two big chances they had and maybe a foot offside for Marcus.
“Tactically, we knew they were going to give us some problems and I thought we were excellent defensively.”
