The Reds took an early lead under one minute when Andy Robertson clips in a precise cross for Diogo Jota to score from close range.
The Portugal international doubled his goal tally in the 32nd minutes as Salah and Henderson combine brilliantly on the left to play in an unmarked Jota, who once again is in the right place at the right time to tap the ball home.
Thiago Alcantara made it 3-0 five minutes later when he rolls the ball under his foot and then cracks an effort at goal from the edge of the box, which is heavily deflected past the hopeless McCarthy in Southampton's goal.
Liverpool looked comfortable all through the game as they controlled the possession, Van Dijk who was left unmarked on the brink of the box fires in a low shot under McCarthy's body and into the back of the net.
