Former Chelsea and Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has announced his retirement from playing football at age 35.

The creative midfielder enjoyed fruitful spell during his 11 years in the Premier League with Chelsea.

Mikel came into the limelight following his move to Stamford Bridge in 2006 from Norwegian club.

The former Nigerian football enjoyed a 20-year professional career with several clubs such as Chelsea, Stoke City, Trabzonspor and Middlesbrough. John Mikel also played in China with Tianjin TEDA in 2017. 

The 35 years old played 91 times for Nigeria, scoring six goals before retiring in 2016.


Chelsea have celebrated the two times Premier League winner with a pictured holding the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2012. 

Mikel also won three FA Cups, two League Cups, Europa League with th Blues. 

Meanwhile the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has shared a message to the former captain who won the African Cup of Nations in 2013.
