According to the Iranian state news agency IRNA, the American counterpart to the Iranian Football Federation has removed the word "Allah" from its flag in social media posts. The Iranian Football Federation has complained to FIFA about this.

The complaint was filed prior to Tuesday's World Cup matchup between Iran and the United States.

According to the Iranian state news agency IRNA, "the Instagram page of the US football federation removed the Allah symbol from the Iranian flag in an unprofessional act."

It also stated that the governing body of Iranian football has written to FIFA "to demand it issue a serious warning to the US federation."

The complaint has not received an immediate public response from FIFA.
On Tuesday, Team USA and Iran will meet in a crucial World Cup match;a game already complicated by the nations' long-standing hostility

In support of "women in Iran fighting for basic human rights," the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) issued a statement on Sunday morning announcing its decision to remove Iran's official flag from social media accounts.

The Islamic Republic's flag has three horizontal bands of red, white, and green, with the word "Allah" written in stylized script in the middle.

The US men's team's Twitter banner, which listed the team's group-stage matches, was the only place where the Iranian flag displayed its green, white, and red colors. The same was evident in a Facebook and Instagram post detailing the group's current point totals.

The new flag had been removed from Facebook and Instagram posts by Sunday afternoon, and the old flag with the emblem had been put back in the Twitter banner.

The federation stated, "We wanted to show our support for the women in Iran with our graphic for 24 hours."

The Iranian Tasnim news agency wrote on Twitter that the US team "breached the FIFA charter, for which a 10-game suspension is the appropriate penalty."
Further, it stated that the United States team "should be kicked out" of the World Cup.
