Benfica set to propose a new contract for Enzo Fernandez to ward off Chelsea and Man Utd interest

Portugese club, Benfica are set to offer Enzo Fernandez a new contract that will tie him down to the cub for new few years. 

The 21-year-old has emerged one of the most sort after youngsters in Europe following his performance at the just concluded 2022 World Cup in Qatar 

By suggesting a new contract, Benfica have demonstrated their desire to keep Enzo Fernandez, a target for Chelsea.

In response to reports that they were willing to let the 21-year-old player go if his £106 million release clause was met, the club released an official statement on Thursday that stated:  ‘We insist our intention is to keep Enzo here until the end of the season’.

Chelsea needs to meet the clause in order to acquire Fernandez and persuade the Argentine midfielder of their plan.


Despite only joining Benfica in June from his native Argentina's River Plate, the star player has already attracted interest from a number of top teams.

After making substitute appearances in the Albiceleste's first two matches, he went on to star for the Albiceleste in Qatar and played a key role in their World Cup victory. He started every game in the knockout stages and was a key player in their victory.

Fernandez has scored three goals and provided five assists in 24 games across all competitions for the club based in Lisbon, in addition to his goal and assist in Qatar.

In recognition of his work for his country, the 21-year-old received the World Cup Young Player of the Year award as well.
