After a prolonged battle with colon cancer, Pele passed away on Thursday at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in Sao Paulo at the age of 82.

He is hailed as a god-like figure in his native Brazil, where he is regarded as the greatest soccer player ever.

After the soccer legend, who led Brazil to its first World Cup in 1958, passed away, the nation went into mourning. Many people flocked to the streets or Santos' stadium to pay tribute to the King.

Pele made his debut at Santos and led the Brazilian team to two 1962 and 1963 Intercontinental Cup victories.

A public wake is anticipated to take place at the soccer club's home, the Urbano Caldeira Stadium, where he will be laid to rest.

After the news of the icon's passing broke on Thursday afternoon, fans of the club gathered outside the stadium to hold a vigil for him.
