Jamie Carragher was informed on the special edition of Monday Night Football, which aired on December 21; 23:07) that Granit Xhaka is a special person and that as Arsenal manager he felt compelled to protect him.

This season, Xhaka is playing his best football for the Gunners. Arteta has got what any semblance of Arsene Wenger and Unai Emery were generally unfit to get from the Switzerland worldwide since his £30 million move.

He has been playing a role that is more complex. And he has absolutely flourished, contributing significantly to Arsenal's ascent to the Premier League's top spot.

“He came into pre-season fitter than ever, slimmer than ever. And he knew that if we wanted to take the team to a different level, we had to change his role,” Arteta told Monday Night Football.

“He is a special person. He’s very straight, he’s very honest, he’s very loyal. And he’s very passionate about what he does. So when you have somebody like that, you want to protect him and you want to fulfil the talent that he has. He’s made some mistakes and he’s learned from it.

“But he’s always faced adversity and difficultly, and he’s never run away from it. And this what I think all the managers want from our players. You know that you can count on him. And he will fight and he will break walls for you.”

After it appeared that their relationship was irreparably damaged a few years ago, Xhaka appears to have achieved the impossible by winning over all of the fans.

After it was decided that they needed to change his position, Arteta has praised Xhaka for his willingness to change heading into this season. During this time, he also explained why, throughout his time in North London, every manager at Arsenal has rarely lost faith in the 30-year-old.
