In a thrilling match on Thursday night, the Reds' Premier League opponents eliminated them from the competition in the round of 16. Following goals from Erling Haaland and Riyad Mahrez, Liverpool's Fabio Carvalho and Mohamed Salah scored goals to even the score.
After Nathan Ake made it 3-2, Jurgen Klopp's team had one more significant opportunity to tie the score when 23-year-old Nunez broke through on goal in the 72nd minute. Despite being in a one-on-one situation, the £64 million Uruguayan striker missed the post with his shot.
And when their costly summer addition put on yet another lackluster goal-scoring performance, Reds fans were left ripping out their own hair in misery.
In his first game back since losing to Uruguay in the World Cup group stage, the striker was able to record an assist. He ran down the left side before laying off a beautiful pass for Salah to tap home Liverpool's second goal.
Nunez, though, continued to display plenty of the shoddy finishing that has been a hallmark of his game ever since he left Benfica. He scored 34 goals last season and has nine goals in 19 games this year.
