Mikel Arteta has provided transfer update on the future of William Saliba.

The 21-year-old French defender has been having a great season with Arsenal in what could be described as his debut campaign.

Despite signing for Arsenal in 2019 from Saint Etienne, he played two seasons on loan in the French Ligue 1, where he helped Marseille finish 2nd place in the league last season.

Mikel Arteta decided to integrate William Saliba into his first team which has seen him play every Premier League game so far in the campaign.

Saliba has also contributed to the team with 3 goals so far, becoming one of the Gunners fans favourite.

Prior to Saturday night's match between Arsenal and Brighton, Mikel Arteta spoke with the media.

Arteta remains optimistic that the French defender will extend his presence at the club. He stressed on the importance of Saliba in the team and that technical director, Edu and Arsenal board will have to convince the player to stay with their offer.

Arteta said: "We have a few of those that we are willing to extend the contract. Willy is one of them. I think he’s shown in the months that he’s been with us the quality and the personality he has to play at the level that we want. We are trying to do that because we know he can be a really important part of our plans."

If you recall, the Gunners celebrated their return to domestic play following the World Cup with an impressive 3-1 thrashing of West Ham. With 40 points, the Gunners are leading the Premier League standings.

Gunners will host Brighton Hove Albion on Saturday evening kick off at the Emirates stadium.

He added: "I hope so. That’s more to Edu and the board to be discussing with him. What I know is that the player is really happy, the player wants to be here and that’s the main thing."
