M'Bami, a former PSG and Cameroon midfielder, passed away at age 40 after a heart attack.

Modeste M'Bami, a former Cameroonian and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, passed away on Saturday at the age of 40 following a heart attack.

M'Bami had stints with PSG and Olympique de Marseille among other French teams. With PSG, he won the Coupe de France in 2004 and 2006.

M'Bami, a member of the Cameroon team that won gold in the Sydney Olympics in 2000, scored three goals in 37 games for his country.

The midfielder earned a runners-up medal at the 2003 Confederations Cup, after his country fell to France in the final after extra time.

After a brief stint at Le Havre, he also played in Spain, China, and Saudi Arabia until announcing his retirement in 2016.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain released a statement and said while extending their sympathies to his family.

'Paris Saint-Germain is in mourning. Modeste M'Bami has passed away at the age of 40 after suffering a heart attack,' the club said in a statement.

'Paris Saint-Germain offers heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.'

M'Bami participated in tryouts with several Premier League teams in 2009, but ultimately decided to transfer to Almeria in Spain.
