30,000 cheering fans greeted Luis Suarez during his Gremio unveiling this week, surpassing the number of supporters who greeted Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia.
Earlier in their careers, the two players were on opposing sides of the El Clasico debate, but the Uruguayan can brag about his hero's reception in Brazil.
Suarez is set to follow in the footsteps of Ronaldo Nazario and Ronaldinho by joining Gremio, a Porto Alegre-based club that has only recently returned to the Brazilian top flight. After his contract with boyhood club Nacional expired, the 35-year-old became a free agent.
Ronaldo was also a free agent after his contract with Manchester United was mutually terminated following a heated media interview in which he criticized Erik ten Hag and the team. The Portuguese player, who became the highest-paid player in history after signing a contract with Saudi club Al-Nassr, claims to have received offers from all over the world.
But Suarez can still consider his unveiling a minor victory because 30,000 spectators packed the Arena de Gremio, which is thousands more than Ronaldo drew in Riyadh.
