Despite receiving a cap for the 2018 World Cup champions, Lyon star Houssem Aouar has changed his national allegiance.
Real Betis, Roma, and Nottingham Forest have all been linked to the midfielder, whose contract expires in the summer and has attracted interest from clubs across Europe.
Aouar played for France's Under-17 and Under-21 teams before Didier Deschamps selected him for his first senior appearance.
At the Stade de France, the 24-year-old made his France debut in his team's 7-1 rout of Ukraine. Aouar recorded two assists in his one and only start.
Aouar had previously been called up for France's Nations League campaign, but he was not included in the lineup for the matches against Croatia and Portugal.
The Frenchman, who is of Algerian descent, was left off of Deschamps' teams for the Qatar 2022 World Cup and Euro 2020.
Aouar is reportedly planning to abandon his brief association with France and reaffirm his allegiance to Algeria.
According to DZfoot, Aouar will now represent Algeria, as confirmed by Djahid Zefizef, president of the Algerian Football Federation (AFF).
Aouar had previously kept quiet about his plans for the international stage as rumors of him representing Algeria grew.
According to FIFA regulations, a player may change their nationality as long as they have not participated in a competitive match for a particular nation.
Additionally, any change in a player's national allegiance must be approved by the World Cup organizers.
Aouar had previously been invited by the Algerian FA to represent Algeria in a friendly game against Nigeria in September of last year.
