Early in the second half, Andy Carroll made a strong challenge on the Danish midfielder and lost.

Carroll knocked out Eriksen in an effort to regain possession after losing it with a hefty touch.

Eriksen needed to be replaced because he was in agony. Eriksen was replaced by fellow midfielder Fred, who entered the game in the 57th minute and scored our third goal of the game.

Carroll later lost his job because of two bookable offenses.

Eriksen is now a serious question mark for Wednesday's second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal against Nottingham Forest. The midfielder may have already been rested after the first leg's 3-0 victory, but United also has games against Leeds and Crystal Palace in the Premier League to consider.

Since joining Ten Hag in the summer on a free transfer after playing for Brentford, Eriksen has been an important member of the team. In 30 appearances this season in all competitions, the 30-year-old has contributed two goals and nine assists.

In midfield, he has frequently been chosen above Fred and Scott McTominay in addition to Casemiro, who was the standout against Reading.
