Manchester United was reportedly interested in signing Julian Alvarez before the Argentine forward moved to rivals Man City.
The 22-year-old was acquired by Pep Guardiola's team for a reported £14 million on the final day of the January transfer window last year.
If a move had been forced through, Alvarez, who last month won the World Cup with Argentina, may have been playing for Manchester's red side.
The Red Devils 'tracked' Alvarez before his transfer to Man City, according to The Athletic.
When Ralf Rangnick took over as temporary manager in November 2021 following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, they "drew the drawbridge" on the move, though.
Alvarez joined Man City in the summer after spending the second half of the previous season on loan at River Plate. In 22 appearances, he has scored eight goals.
In addition, he contributed four goals to Argentina's World Cup victory, including two against Croatia in the semifinals.
Rangnick mentioned Alvarez when talking about forwards United might have signed in January, as Sky Sports reported in May.
Rangnick disclosed that the club's management turned down his last-minute attempts to sign a forward in January, leaving them without enough strikers for the remainder of the campaign.
