Jude Bellingham expressed his surprise at Chelsea's choice to repel the counterattack to their own corner to CBS Sports.
Last night's first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 saw the Blues suffer a 1-0 loss.
They dominated large stretches of the game, but encountered a similar issue when trying to put the ball in the net.
By hitting the crossbar in the first half, Joao Felix came the closest to scoring away from home.
He said: “Just pace, wasn’t it? I was surprised they left just one back especially when they knew it was Karim that was going to be breaking.
“He got the ball under control well and he just used the attributes that we all know he’s got and what we’ve seen in training from him. Now that he’s adapted and is comfortable we know he can create moments like that.”
Despite their best efforts, Chelsea was unable to reverse his goal last night despite pressing for one, especially in the second half.
This sets up a remarkably intriguing second leg at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea probably coming out on top given the results of the first leg.
They will need to score at least once over the course of 90 minutes to maintain their Champions League hopes against a team that has yet to drop a game this calendar year.
