When The Times questioned Xavi about whether Mikel Arteta's accomplishments at Arsenal, who are currently in first place in the Premier League, had surprised him, Xavi responded.
One of the world's most exciting football coaches, Arteta has made a name for himself. It goes without saying that a few years ago, that statement would have been practically unimaginable.
The Spaniard received his first number-one position from Arsenal. And for a while, it seemed as though the 40-year-old might not be up to the task. At various times, it seemed almost remarkable.
That faith has, however, been formally confirmed. Given the exciting group of players they assembled last season, Arsenal ought to have placed in the top four.
Due to their fourth-place finish at the end of the campaign, many questioned them this term. With their most recent victory, they made a significant point and are currently in the lead.
Compared to Manchester City, they are two points ahead. Furthermore, they are playing a game. Because of Arteta, many of us have had to retract our statements.
“No, he’s not surprised me because he had the best references [having worked alongside Guardiola at City] and because if you have played as a central midfielder at Barça you already have a headstart — you have the map of your pitch in your head,” he told The Times.
“And because Pepe Reina is a close friend of his and has always spoken very well of him. I had a feeling that Arteta would do very well, but it was just a feeling.”
