Miguel Almirón's tying goal with seconds remaining gave Newcastle their first victory in six games, suggesting they may have finally moved over their Carabao Cup final loss.

After a 2-1 win against struggling Wolves thanks to the forward's curling performance, Eddie Howe's team climbed back up to fifth position in the standings.

Early on, the Magpies controlled possession and pressed down their opponents, but despite their dominance, they only managed to produce two clear-cut chances: Kieran Trippier's free-kick hit the wall, and Alexander Isak's feeble header was saved. At the other end, a visibly repentant Nick Pope managed to escape punishment for hauling down Ral Jiménez in the area when VAR determined referee Andy Madley had not made a blatant mistake.

Six minutes after that fortunate escape, the hosts took the lead when Isak expertly headed Tripper's free-kick into the far corner. In addition to many attempts being blocked by a tenacious Wolves defense, the advantage almost increased when Bruno Guimares just missed the crossbar. Daniel Podence then had a rare opportunity to shoot but rattled the woodwork.

At the interval, Julen Lopetegui's team gained momentum thanks to the introduction of Pedro Neto, who deflected a ferocious free-kick and set up Joao Moutinho for a shot that was saved. As Trippier slipped, Hwang Hee-Chan properly supplied the equalizer by passing into an empty goal from close range.

As another replacement, Almirón, was spotted open by Joe Willock and given room to work with, he curled into the far corner to give Newcastle the lead once again. It was enough to guarantee Wolves remained only three points above the relegation zone as Howe's team earned their first victory since January and moved to within four points of the UEFA Champions League spots.
