It was expected that Reims would keep the back door shut during a closely fought first half after keeping a clean sheet in each of their previous four Ligue 1 games coming into this match. The visitors did get a little bit of luck, however, as Wissam Ben Yedder missed two consecutively perfect opportunities. Initially, it was the striker's fault since his hesitation inside the penalty area gave the Reims defense time to gather itself and mount a tackle. Ben Yedder would then be denied by the woodwork after eluding the visitors' backline's attempts the second time, with the 32-year-beautiful old's lob unfortunatey rebounding off the post.
As much the superior team in the first half, Monaco should have seized the lead before intermission, and their squandered opportunities caught up to them halfway through the second half. Folarin Balogun, who has had a fantastic season for Reims, got in behind the home team's defense before slipping a shot past Alexander Nübel of Monaco.
Nübel really made a horrible error in goal, getting a hand on the Balogun attempt but eventually failing to make a stop. Late in the game, the Bayern Munich loanee would save his reputation by making a great one-on-one save to stop Balogun from scoring again. Nevertheless, it was too little, too late for Monaco, who were unable to snare an equalizing goal.
Philippe Clement, the manager of Monaco, is frustrated after seeing his team lose consecutive home league games for the first time since August and failing to win any of their past four competitive games. Les Rouges et Blancs are now in eighth position in the standings, and Reims boss Still had pushed his players not to "put boundaries" on their possible league finish this season. At this stage in the campaign, the incredible narrative shows no indication of stopping down.
