Roma seemed to be playing with a lot of confidence early on, with Georginio Wijnaldum and Tammy Abraham both coming close within the first 10 minutes. Roma had won eight of their previous nine games played at home. Despite the hosts' early dominance, Sassuolo quickly gained control of the game and promptly scored the game's first goal when Armand Laurienté put the ball in after Rui Patrcio parried a curling shot from Andrea Pinamonti. Five minutes after the unexpected goal, the visitors increased their lead when Domenico Berardi's deft cut-back was expertly finished by Lauriente for his second of the game.
Roma rallied after falling down by two goals and quickly pulled one back when Nicola Zalewski scored his first goal as a senior, putting the ball past Andrea Consigli and into the far corner. The Albanian international Marash Kumbulla was sent off for a petulant kick on Berardi inside the area on the stroke of overtime, giving the visitors impetus as they sought an equalizer with time running down. The Sassuolo winger picked himself up and calmly converted the next penalty kick to give the visitors a two-goal advantage heading into halftime.
Just five minutes of the game's resumption, Roma cut the deficit in half when replacement Paulo Dybala curled an exquisite long-range shot into the top corner. Roma came out fighting to get back into the game. Similar to the first half, Sassuolo shown great fortitude to recover control of the situation after Dybala's flash of brilliance. When Berardi thundered a spectacular attempt against the crossbar, Sassuolo came dangerously close to regaining the lead.
The 10 men of Roma kept searching for a tying goal as the game entered its last 20 minutes, but in the 75th minute, Pinamonti received a deft pass from Lauriente and dinked an exquisite finish over Patrcio, thus ending any dreams of a comeback. This effectively put an end to the hosts' effort as Sassoulo came from behind to score three excellent points and extend their SA away winless streak to five games, despite a last-second consolation from Wijnaldum.
