Reece James leaves camp of England national to return to Chelsea due to injury concern

Reece James will return to Chelsea for more evaluation after withdrawing from the England team owing to a "ongoing concern."
The 23-year-old will not play for England against Ukraine on Sunday, and no substitute has been called up. He is now questionable to face Aston Villa the following weekend.

After the back made a brief cameo appearance in the dramatic 2-1 victory over Italy to start England's Euro 2024 qualification campaign, Gareth Southgate will provide another update on the defender's fitness this afternoon.

Because of a knee injury he received in October, James's health is a constant worry for both club and country. He also missed the World Cup and a number of significant games.

After suffering a similar knee injury again, he missed two more games in January and February owing to sickness and a tight hamstring, respectively.

James has only participated in 23 games this season for club and country, missing a total of 24.

Luke Shaw will also miss the game on Sunday after receiving a red card on Thursday at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. He continues to train with the England team as they prepare to play Ukraine, however.
