Arsenal's women's squad avoids a severe scare as their aircraft catches fire in Germany

On Sunday evening, an aircraft bringing the Arsenal women's team returning from their Champions League semifinal first leg against Wolfsburg caught fire on the runway.
A bird flew into the engine just before takeoff at the Braunschweig Wolfsburg Airport, causing the mishap.

The pilots on board the Boeing 737 rapidly evacuated the passengers, including the first team squad of Arsenal, to safety as soon as flames began to shoot out of the aircraft.

Arsenal statement: “Our aircraft developed a technical issue prior to take-off in Germany on Sunday evening. As a result, we remained in Wolfsburg overnight on Sunday before flying back to England on Monday afternoon.”

With a victory against Umea IK in 2007, Arsenal Women, the only English team to win the UEFA Women's Champions League, returned from the capital level with VfL Wolfsburg Ladies.

After falling down by two goals within the first 25 minutes, the Gunners fought their way back with fast goals from Ewa Pajor of Poland and Sveindis Jonsdottir of Iceland.

Before halftime, a Brazilian defender for Arsenal pulled one back.

Stina Blackstenius, a Swedish striker who joined Arsenal from BK Hacken in January 2022, equalized the score for the Gunners in the 70th minute.

At the Emirates Stadium on May 1, Arsenal Women will take on VfL Wolsfburg Ladies in the second leg of the match.
