Joao Cancelo joined Bayern Munich on loan during the January transfer window, but the German champions are unwilling to activate the provision that would make his signing from Man City permanent.
Portuguese defender Joao Cancelo will cost Manchester City £60 million, which will cause them considerable trouble.
After manager Pep Guardiola approved a loan transfer to the Bundesliga club when it became apparent that the 28-year-old was turning into a disruptive dressing room interest, Cancelo will return to the Etihad with Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.
Bayern have the option of making the arrangement permanent, but they have already determined that City's £60 million asking price is too high. The German team is hoping to either prolong Cancelo's loan until the next season or pay less than half of that.
The former full-back for Benfica, Valencia, and Juventus following Cancelo is admired by and wanted by new Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel.
“I love João, I’ve had to play against him many times. He has the absolute highest quality, left foot, right foot, passing. He’s a different type of player than Benji Pavard. He can also play on the left in the back four,” Tuchel said in midweek.
Joao Cancelo's loan agreement has a condition that, if activated, might cause Bayern to reduce the asking price.
Cancelo, who joined the Blues in a £60 million deal that included the defender moving to Juventus as a makeweight in the summer of 2019, excelled as the team won back-to-back championships.
Nevertheless, Guardiola's decision to using Kyle Walker and Nathan Ake as his starting full-backs due to a lack of form and the emergence of Rico Lewis as a teenager contributed to Cancelo's dissatisfaction.
