After being promoted back to the Premier League, Forest recruited a number of fresh acquisitions, including Lingard, who signed a one-year deal after leaving his old team, Manchester United.
The former West Ham loanee signed a contract for £120,000 a week and joined the team for free.
He has only started 12 Premier League games for Forest, who are now 18th and in the last relegation zone after going 10 games without a victory due to injuries and other players being picked.
At the conclusion of the current campaign, Lingard will once again be a free agent, and he is likely to depart City Ground.
Local rivals Leicester City, who are also battling for survival, have shown interest. In the 2012–13 season, Lingard spent time on loan with the Foxes and made five Championship appearances.
Additionally, if Lingard wants to pursue a career in the Middle East, there are other choices from overseas, like the Middle Eastern powerhouse Fenerbahce.
On Sunday, manager Steve Cooper offered Lingard a two-minute cameo against his old team, United, as the visitors easily defeated them 2-0.
He acknowledged before the game that Lingard's time in Nottingham has not been easy.
