Manchester United were eliminated from the Europa League by Sevilla on Thursday night, according to Paul Scholes.
On Thursday night in the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, Manchester United humiliatingly lost to a ruthless Sevilla, eliminating them from the Europa League.

In the second leg, United never got going after blowing a 2-0 lead in the first.

Youssef En-Nesyri's early goal gave Sevilla the advantage on aggregate, and the Moroccan scored again late after Loic Bade had already scored. Sevilla didn't look back.

Harry Maguire had another terrible outing, giving the ball away to help Sevilla's opening after he scored an own goal in last week's 2-2 draw, while David de Gea assisted to all three goals surrendered.

It was impossible to imagine that United would lose this match, much less by an aggregate score of 5-2, after leading the first leg by a score of 2-0 at the break last week.

And yet, that is precisely what occurred when Erik ten Hag's first season as manager's hopes for European hardware disintegrated.

As a result of Fernandes' harsh card in the match at Old Trafford last week, United were without the Portuguese star for the contest at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.
One could feel the 28-year-old's absence, and Scholes claimed that other leaders ought to have stepped out in his stead.

"We missed Bruno tonight - Bruno is one player who can take the ball and control play at times, he’s been in fantastic form over the last three or four weeks," Scholes said on BT Sport.

"He was a big miss but there are other leaders out there.

"This squad can handle a lot of games - Forest on Sunday, great, handled it really well - but when it comes to the crunch games with big atmospheres, it seems that they just fall short."
