Kevin De Bruyne's departure from Chelsea in 2014 was explained by Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.
The international midfielder from Belgium has since proved himself to be among the greatest in the world.
De Bruyne left Belgian club Genk in January 2012 for a rumored £7 million transfer to Stamford.
The midfielder spent the remainder of the season on loan with the team before moving on to the Bundesliga's Werder Bremen for the 2012–13 campaign.
The next season, the Belgian international was back at Stamford Bridge and had a difficult time fitting in with the Jose Mourinho-led squad.
He only made nine starts for the team until Chelsea released him, allowing him to join Wolfsburg, where he was able to reestablish his name in European football.
The Belgian international left there and joined Manchester City before the 2015–16 campaign, where he developed into one of the top midfielders in worldwide.
De Bruyne's departure was discussed by Lampard, a Blues player who was still actively playing at the time.
Although Lampard said he was unaware of the details of what transpired between De Bruyne and Mourinho, he added that he respected De Bruyne's decision to leave the team in order to play regular football.
“Kevin was fighting more for the No.10 position or one of the two wide players,” he told his press conference.
“When he was with us in his younger days, we were probably quite well stacked in those attacking areas.
“Eden [Hazard] was here, [Andre] Schurrle was here, Juan Mata was here and what I remember from Kevin was a real hunger and desire to come in and play.”
In addition to other awards, De Bruyne has helped the City citizens win the total of five Premier League championships. He is now only a victory away from taking home both the FA Cup and the Champions League this year.
After defeating his old team Blues 1-0 at the Etihad earlier on Sunday, the Belgian and Manchester City won the Premier League.
