Karim Adeyemi, a star for Borussia Dortmund, has explained why he chooses to wear unique shin guards that make fun of the hit anime One Piece.
Prior to the season's last match, Dortmund leads Bayern Munich by two points in the Bundesliga standings.
If they can win their last game of the season, it would be their first league championship since 2012.
On Saturday, Edin Terzic's team will welcome FSV Mainz at home while Bayern plays FC Koln.
“They are shin pads designed specifically for me,” Adeyemi told the Bundesliga’s official newsletter.
“I have the national flags of my heritage on them – one pair with Nigeria, and the other with Romania. I also have the character Luffy from the One Piece anime on them. He is my favourite character from the series, so I always play with these shin pads.”
Adeyemi, who joined the German team last summer in a deal costing €38 million from Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg, has six goals and five assists in 12 Bundesliga appearances.
A photo of Adeyemi's shin guards went viral, sparking conversation among football fans who love anime.
The protagonist of the Japanese animated television series One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy, is a member of The Guards.
According to the forward, they were made for him and depict the flags of his ancestry, Nigeria and Romania, which represent his father and mother, respectively.
