Tony Adams, a former Arsenal player, criticized Mikel Arteta for his squad selection in the Premier League match on Saturday that ended in a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Adams criticized the Spanish player for the tactical choice he made in the match, which all but ended Arsenal's chances of mathematically dethroning Manchester City as champion.
According to the club, the changes in the squad composition led to a series of circumstances that perfectly complemented the opponents' strategy.
Ben White and Gabriel Magalhaes were teamed as the central defensive pairing in place of the injured Oleksandr Zinchenko and William Saliba. Thomas Partey filled in at right back.
Adans was especially perplexed by Arteta's choice to play Jakub Kiwior as the left-back position when Kieran Tierney was available but just on the bench.
As a result of an unregulated Morgan Gibbs-White's overhit ball that accidentally found its way into the goal after Gabriel's slide tackle deflected off the Nigerian international's foot, Taiwo Awoninyi scored his fifth goal in three games.
Adams told Sky Sports, “The tackle was unlucky but both the full-backs are out of the game. He’s gone with Partey and Kiwior and none of them [are there] it’s a two on two, actually it was a three on two situation and they’re waiting for Arsenal.
“I’ve been really disappointed. Ben White has been brilliant on the right-hand side with Saka and all of a sudden he’s gone to put Partey in there and we’ve got Tierney on the bench.”
