Following the Reds' last home game of the season on Saturday afternoon, Roberto Firmino broke down in tears as he bid farewell to the Liverpool fans.
With a top-four finish suddenly becoming exceedingly implausible, Liverpool settled for a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa. The hero, though, was Firmino, who tied the score with just a few minutes left before departing the club at the conclusion of the season.
The Brazilian, who joined Liverpool back in 2015, is expected to play in the season finale against Southampton, who have already been demoted. However, he is no longer a Liverpool player and his time at Anfield is gone.
The lengthy James Milner, who also left the club at the conclusion of the season, was not the only Liverpool player to play in his last home match, receiving a guard of honor. Banners were hoisted on the Kop before the game, and both players were introduced as replacements to rousing applause from the fans.
After the game, there was celebration for Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who were not in the matchday squad and will depart at the conclusion of the season. On the Anfield field, framed photos of each of the four players were distributed.
