Singer Seun Kuti, who is now being held without bail after allegedly assaulting a police officer, has apparently been named the "General Overseer" of his cell by the other prisoners and been handed a copy of the Bible as a symbol of his authority.
After the convicts originally rejected him, Vanguard writes that his nomination as the GO wasn't without some drama.
In case you forgot, Seun was detained on Monday, May 15, reportedly for sl@ping a police officer on the Third Mainland bridge.
Seun was reportedly transported to the cell to join other accused offenders after preliminary interrogations were finished. His first stunner, it was later discovered, was the convict leader's deep, harsh baritone voice telling him to stay upright.
A crisis reportedly broke out in the cell shortly after the convicts allegedly rejected him. The convicts were pounding on the metal door that served as their barrier, demanding that Seun be removed from the cell.
According to sources, Seun began pleading for quiet as the convicts' ruckus became louder. He then realized that the police guards were paying little to no attention to the disturbance his presence had created and the rejection he had received from the prisoners.
At that point, he allegedly offered to give them N25,000, and he was ordered to provide it right away. He had to grovel for the phone in order to contact his wife, who arrived with the money promptly and gave it to their boss. The prisoners then welcomed him (Seun) and gave him a place to sit down.
Additionally, according to information obtained by Vanguard, Seun was so enraged by the unpleasant events that had place that he refused to consume any of the food that had been given, even by his wife. Before he began eating again, the hunger strike lasted for over two days.
The drama's finale came when the prisoners subsequently named him the General Overseer of the Cell and presented him with a bible. That implies he is now conducting the prisoners in prayer sessions as needed, at the conclusion of which they would all chant, "GO, GO."
