James Milner made a suggestion that the decision not to extend the midfielder's contract may have been made by Liverpool's leaders rather than manager Jurgen Klopp.
The 37-year-old, who joined the Reds from Manchester City in 2015, is expected to depart the organization as a free agent.
Milner became one of the team's most accomplished players when he was at Anfield, collecting several awards, including the Champions League and Premier League medals.
Although the midfielder is eager for fresh challenges, Milner was still very much a part of Klopp's plans for next season when the decision was made for the player to go on, according to an interview with LFCTV.
Milner told the club’s channel: ‘It would be a shame to stop when you’ve got a bit of life in you.
‘Jurgen Klopp is a pretty good manager and the fact he still wanted me here and said I can do a job is pleasing.
‘I haven’t started a load of games this year, but I feel like I have contributed when I have been asked to,’ the player added.
On Saturday, when the Reds played Aston Villa, Milner featured in his farewell game at Anfield. He replaced Jordan Henderson in the second half of the game.
Following the final whistle, Milner and other outgoing players including as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Roberto Firmino, and Naby Keita were given a guard of honor by their teammates.
James Milner added that, ‘The club obviously made their decision on that. It’s nice I’m in a position where the manager wanted me to stay, but it got to the point where I got to terms [with it].’
The former Manchester City midfielder has been linked to join Brighton Hove Albion on a free transfer.
Report suggest that Milner is close to agreeing a move to the Amex stadium.
