Lagos states that street trading is not tolerated

On Wednesday, the Lagos State Government read the Riot Act to street vendors around the state, particularly those along the Third Mainland Bridge and the Eko Bridge.

Street trade is not allowed in the locations, according to a statement from Gaji Omobolaji, permanent secretary of the Office of Environmental Services.

Omobolaji emphasized that the move was consistent with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's T.H.E.M.E.S. Agenda, which aims to build a safer state for all citizens while also promoting a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing environment.

The Omobolaji issued a warning that anybody captured would be subject to prosecution at the created Mobile Courts under the state's environmental laws and that their merchandise would also be seized.

“The latest enforcement drive against street traders, when commenced, would be a continuous one that would also be sustained,” the statement added.

He said that street vendors, who not only detracted from the beauty of the city and exposed themselves to dangerous circumstances, but also presented a threat to the security of people and property, had no place in Lagos, a megacity that is evolving into a smart city.

The governor had approved the enforcement, which would be carried out by a dedicated task team of the Kick Against Indiscipline in coordination with other security agencies, the speaker said.
