Following serving 18 months in jail, the former IRT chief of the Inspector General of Police, Abba Kyari, has been granted bail.
In February 2022, Kyari and several of his team members were detained when the National narcotics Law Enforcement Agency, or NDLEA, allegedly tampered with narcotics evidence.
In connection with 21.25kg of cocaine, the IRT team detained Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne in January 2022. The suspects were then turned over to the NDLEA along with the cocaine.
When NDLEA designated Kyari and certain members of his IRT sought for tampering with the evidence, the case took a dramatic turn.
After being found guilty, Chibunna Patrick Umeibe and Emeka Alphonsus Ezenwanne were both freed from jail.
Kyari was granted bail on Thursday by Justice Omotosho of Federal High Court 9 after repeated failed efforts to get it.
He determined that since DCP Abba Kyari and his colleagues refused to flee the assault on Kuje Prison on July 5, 2022, during which over 90% of the prisoners managed to escape,
