The Chiefs of Defense Staff Committee of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced the finalization of its military intervention strategy for Niger Republic. Following a two-day meeting on August 18, the committee also selected a specific date to initiate the military intervention in the West African nation.
Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, clarified that while ECOWAS military chiefs have prepared for a mediation mission to the country, they remain open to dialogue and have not ruled out that possibility.
“We are ready to go anytime the order is given.
“The D-day is also decided. We’ve already agreed and fine-tuned what will be required for the intervention. As we speak, we are still getting ready for [a] mediation mission into the country, so we have not shut any door.
“Let no one be in doubt that if everything else fails, the valiant forces of West Africa, both the military and the civilian components, are ready to answer to the call of duty.” Musah said
It could be recalled that the time frame for the ultimatum given for the unconditional surrender to the military junta in Niger still stands. And all efforts to reach an agreement, most especially for the release of Niger democratic elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, who has since been kept under house arrest after the coup.
Just recently there have been talks about the American Army removing their troops from Niger in the coming days due to the rising tension in the Sahel region
