Real Madrid has suffered a significant setback before the start of the next La Liga season this weekend.

Thibaut Courtois, the goalie for Real Madrid, reportedly tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Following the injury, the Belgian international is probably going to miss the most of the season, Real Madrid stated in a formal statement.

Thibaut Courtois won't play in Real Madrid's season-opening La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

The 31-year-old international from Belgium will have surgery soon.

Thibaut Courtois released an update for his supporters on his social media page.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper was seen lounging on the sofa with a bandaged leg.

He captioned, "You never expect to go through something like this but now it's time to accept it and do everything to overcome it and come back even stronger. Thank you all for the energy, love and encouragement, I assure you that they motivate me to recover as soon as possible"

Since joining Real Madrid in 2018, Courtois has made 230 appearances and has twice won Spain's La Liga.
