It is no longer news that Chelsea are hell bent on wanting to sign Moises Caicedo to boost their defensive midfield before the start of the 23/24 season. But according to Fabricio Romano Brighton are asking for up to £100 million. An amount Chelsea are reluctant to pay. But Brighton on the other hand know the value of their star player and are not willing to let him go for less. This was due to the fact that both Enzo Fernandez and Declan Rice were also thought to be valued at the same amount.
This is what Fabricio Romano has to say about the latest development:
“The negotiations for Moises Caicedo is still ongoing because as I already explained, from what I am told, this negotiation between Chelsea and Brighton is kind of direct negotiation so it’s not traditional negotiations in terms of an official bid and official answer from the other club,” Romano said on Monday’s DeBrief podcast.
"The idea for Chelsea is to close this for around £70 million plus add-ons, or maybe £80 million, this has to be the package for Moises Caicedo. Brighton want more than this, so Brighton feel that can rise to something around maybe £90 million or £100 million,"
"There is a crucial point, the player wants to go because Roberto De Zerbi told him in February when he signed a new deal that had this opportunity to go and to find a new club in case they received a good proposal, so I am sure that Moises Caicedo deal is going to be very concrete in the next days"
Regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the premier league, the 21 years old midfielder enjoyed a successful outing with the seagulls last season, which included making some defensive appearances at the back three, an attribute that showcases his versatility.
Moises Caicedo is one player Chelsea would not want to afford to miss out on especially with the mass exodus of their midfielders. And also it is no longer a secret knowing that their new coach Mauricio Pochettino is a huge fan and admirer of the young South American player.
But since nothing has been etched on stone as per the final outcome of the deal, let's take a look at some potential alternative defensive midfielders that Chelsea could consider in the event that they miss out on the signing of Moises Caicedo before the start of next season.
List of alternative defensive midfielders Chelsea should sign in case they miss out on Moises Caicedo
1. Joshua Kimmich Joshua Kimmish is arguably one of the best midfielders out there. The 28 years old German midfielder is known for his aggression, versatility and the keen ability to read the game and break up attacks. He currently plays for Bayern Munich, but there has been transfer speculations about Barcelona and Manchester City wanting to sign him. It will be good to see if Chelsea will join the park. Kimmich is one player with much experience who Chelsea should certainly consider if they couldn't get Caicedo. I believe he will fit perfectly with the Chelsea style of play.
2. Nicolò Barella
Nicolo Barella is another perfect player Chelsea should consider in their quest for a player that will partner Enzo at the heart of the midfield. The 26 year-old Italian midfielder is one of the most highly rated midfielders in Europe and would be a major signing for Chelsea. He is a dynamic and versatile player who can play in a variety of positions. He currently plays for Inter Milan and was a key player in the just concluded Serie A season. He is a favorite among the Nerazzurri fans but the past week has seen him linked with various clubs across Europe. Especially Newcastle United, Liverpool and PSG.
Emmanuel "Manu" Kouadio Kone is one player that has been on Chelsea's radar for some time now. He has, in the past, been seen as a perfect replacement for N'golo Kante during Potter's time as Chelsea Head coach. The 22-year-old French midfielder has been impressive for Borussia Monchengladbach this season and is also reportedly available for around £35 million. A less cheaper alternative than Moises Caicedo. Manu is a strong and physical player with good passing and dribbling skills who can utilize both of his feet perfectly. Other clubs, such as Liverpool, RB Leipzig, Aston Villa and Wolves are all interested in signing him.
Fondly called the Swedish N'golo Kante, Bilal Hussein, 23, is one player Chelsea definitely has to take a look at as a close and cheaper alternative in the event that they couldn't land Moises Caicedo. He is one player that has the strength and agility to cut down any surging attack as a right footed, deep lying box to box playmaker. Hussein is one player with lots of potential to succeed in any team outside of Sweden.
5. Romeo Lavia
There is already an ongoing bidding war between Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United for the service of 20 year old Romeo Lavia. To some extent this speaks a lot about the kind of player he is. Watching him play for Southampton last season was enough for any club to want him in their squad. Regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the past season in the premier league.
The young Belgian midfielder has a great command of the ball on his feet, he is also strong, fast and skillful. He is Reportedly available for £50 million, an amount which Liverpool are unwilling to pay except Southampton reduce the offer. This seems like a perfect opportunity for Chelsea to re-enter into the negotiation if they really need an alternative in case the Caicedo deal fails to materialize before the start of next season.
These are just a few of the players Chelsea could sign if they miss out on Moises Caicedo. The club will likely have a number of other targets in mind, and it will be interesting to see who they eventually end up signing.
