The Bavarians rallied from a goal down to win the victory and improve to nine points after failing to defeat the Foals in their previous five games in all competitions.
For the opening 30 minutes, Bayern had perfect control and had more than 70% of the possession until the home team unexpectedly scored when Ko Itakura's looping header from a corner went over goalkeeper Sven Ulreich.
Gladbach's Marvin Friedrich previously struck the woodwork, but Bayern almost equalized when Leroy Sane's strong drive was deflected onto the crossbar by Gladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas in the 39th minute.
After the interval, the visitors picked up their game, wasting early opportunities via Thomas Mueller and Leon Goretzka before Joshua Kimmich floated a beautiful ball for Sane, who stabbed home to tie the score in the 58th and increase his league total to three goals.
The Bavarians could have scored another goal in the 70th, but Serge Gnabry's clear-cut header was stopped by Nicolas.
With three minutes remaining, Tel performed far better, leaping above his defender to score with a head kick.
