The Lagos Assembly declares that the doctor who operated on the kid whose intestine was gone is an unqualified surgeon

This was made public by the Lagos State House of Assembly on Friday, September 21, when it released its conclusions about the events surrounding the loss of the late Adebola Akin-Bright's small intestine.

This information was made public when the House Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, ordered the Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, to write to the State Police Command requesting the arrest of Dr. Abayomi Baiyewu of the Obitoks Hospital in the Alimosho neighborhood of Lagos during a plenary session on Thursday, September 21.

Ad hoc committee of the Lagos Assembly chaired by Noheem Adams was tasked with looking into the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Adebola Akin-Bright's small intestine. During the investigation, the committee discovered that Dr. Baiyewu is not a surgeon and only relied on his medical training, he said.

He further claimed that Baiyewu, whose testimony was recorded, admitted to the committee that he did not conduct any medical examinations on the youngster before to the initial operation, which he performed alone, and that instead, he only relied on the hospital's report.

According to Noheem, after Baiyewu performed the first operation, the youngster continued to complain about stomach discomfort and was brought back to Obitoks Hospital, where Baiyewu performed another surgery all by himself.

Noheem said that after more issues, the kid was sent to LASUTH where it was determined that a portion of his intestine was missing.

The lawmaker claimed that Baiyewu, who is a doctor, should have taken the boy's body part that was removed to a pathology department for testing, but that "Dr. Baiyewu told the committee that the body parts were mistakenly discarded," and that the doctor had planned to perform a third surgery before the boy was taken to LASUTH.

The House expressed its condolences to the grieving family, and Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda demanded that the facility be sealed.

When the committee visited Adebola in the hospital, Lawal Aina, another committee member, described the scene as pitiful to his other committee members.

He noted that Dr. Baiyewu's lack of certification as a surgeon was revealed during questioning.

A formal complaint against Dr. Baiyewu should be submitted to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for action, according to several of the MPs who spoke on the subject. Others called for more rigorous oversight of hospitals and medical facilities.
