Max Verstappen successfully defended his third world championship by placing second in a hectic and incident-filled sprint race at the Qatar Grand Prix
Oscar Piastri of McLaren won the race at the Lusail track, which was illuminated by three safety cars that were brought about by a string of crashes and mishaps.
After falling from third to fifth on the starting grid on the first lap, Verstappen battled back but was unable to overtake Piastri.
Late in the race, Lando Norris of McLaren overcame George Russell of Mercedes to win third place.
Since Nelson Piquet, who also happens to be the father of Max Verstappen's fiancée Kelly, Max Verstappen is the only driver to be elected World Champion on a Saturday.
