Newcastle has confirmed that Tonali has received a 10-month football suspension for engaging in unlawful gambling. The punishment will take effect on Friday, October 27, 2023.

The Italian midfielder may resume playing football competitively on Tuesday, August 27, 2024.
On Thursday, it was revealed that Tonali will be suspended after his inclusion earlier this month in an investigation into claims of illicit betting by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and Italian prosecutors.
But on Friday, before Newcastle's match against Wolves, Eddie Howe said in his pre-match news conference that Tonali still had a "high chance" of playing at Molineux.
Ten months off from football will be part of the punishment, and eight months will be spent in some kind of "therapeutic plan" to aid in his "recovery from gambling addiction."
This will include making at least sixteen public appearances throughout Italy at "federal territorial centers" and amateur sports groups.
In addition, Tonali was fined £17,380 for violating FIGC regulations that forbade players from wagering on football matches that were overseen by FIFA, UEFA, and FIGC.
The midfield player's ban is scheduled to last until late August of next year, during which time he is anticipated to be able to train with Newcastle.
He will be absent from both the first weeks of the Premier League season and Euro 2024.
