Taiwo Awoniyi Ruled Out of 2024 AFCON Due to Groin Injury

Taiwo Awoniyi, the 26-year-old striker for Nottingham Forest and a key player for the Super Eagles, faces the unfortunate possibility of missing the 2024 African Cup of Nations due to a confirmed groin injury.

Nottingham Forest's manager, Steve Cooper, has officially disclosed that Awoniyi's injury will sideline him for a significant period.

Reports indicate that the striker aggravated the injury while representing Nigeria during the recent international break, compounding the severity of the situation.

Nigerian sports journalist Pooja Media echoed concerns, suggesting that Awoniyi's absence from the tournament could be imminent, impacting Nigeria's squad as they prepare to face Ivory Coast in their opening group game scheduled for January in the 2024 AFCON.

Although specifics regarding the duration of Awoniyi's recovery remain undisclosed by Steve Cooper, the absence of a timeframe hints at the seriousness of the injury, raising doubts about the player's return before the tournament's commencement.

Despite featuring in seven appearances for Nigeria and notably scoring twice, Awoniyi's absence is a significant setback for both Nottingham Forest and the Nigerian national team's aspirations in the upcoming tournament.
