Victor Boniface, the rising star at Bayer Leverkusen, attributes much of his growth to the guidance of his coach, Xabi Alonso.
Since his €20.50 million move from Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium in July 2023, Boniface has thrived, netting 18 goals and supplying 10 assists across 29 appearances despite a brief injury hiatus between January and March, establishing himself as Bayer Leverkusen’s leading goal scorer.
Under Alonso’s mentorship, Bayer Leverkusen clinched their maiden Bundesliga title and are poised to secure two more accolades, the Europa League and DFB-POKAL.
Speaking to AFP, Boniface highlighted Alonso's active involvement in training sessions, often outperforming his players, which serves as a catalyst for their improvement.
He shared, “Imagine you’re training and your coach is doing better than you. Then you want to step up your game.”
Boniface emphasized the motivational impact of Alonso's participation in training sessions, stating, “For him to be involved in training gives us a boost.”
Moreover, he revealed Alonso’s personalized approach to his development, saying, “Sometimes he tells me of players he played with, with similar abilities to me. He tries to improve me in my weakest areas.”
