Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali Admits Betting Breaches: Receives Suspended Ban and Fine

It was learnt that an independent Regulatory Commission has responded by issuing a suspended two-month ban from competitive football. Alongside this ban, Tonali has been fined £20,000 and cautioned by the FA regarding his future behavior.

The suspension, however, comes with a unique condition. It will remain inactive throughout the entirety of the 2024/25 season. This decision implies that Tonali will be eligible to resume his football career once he completes an existing ten-month sanction imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on 27 October 2023.

The specifics of Tonali's transgressions have been outlined by the English FA. Tonali admitted to placing four bets on Newcastle to emerge victorious in various matches. These bets include Newcastle's matches against Brighton FC and Burnley in September 2023, as well as a match against Brentford in the same month. Additionally, Tonali placed a bet on Newcastle to defeat Manchester City in September 2023 and included a bet on Newcastle to beat West Ham in October 2023.

When questioned about the amount staked on each bet, Tonali claimed he could not recall the exact figures. However, he assured that none exceeded €10,000, as confirmed by an FA spokesperson. Tonali's admission of guilt and cooperation with the investigation likely influenced the leniency of the punishment issued by the Regulatory Commission.
